The Future Directions of Sociology

In preparation for the 1998 World Congress of Sociology and the approaching 100th anniversary of the discipline in the year 2000, Felice Levine, executive officer of the American Sociological Association, is organizing a two-day North American regional conference. Twenty-five leading sociologists from the U. S. and Canada will review the history of sociological research in North America, debate a number of the fundamental issues that have defined sociology since its inception, and examine how lessons from history might provide the impetus for restructuring sociology in its second century. The Foundation provided a grant for travel and other expenses of both North American and non-North American participants.
