New York City Recovers: The New York City Social Indicators Survey, Wave IV

Since 1997, three waves of the New York Social Indicators Survey (NYSIS) have garnered information from New Yorkers about their health, happiness, financial status, living conditions, participation in government programs, and more. Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center changed the physical and emotional landscape of the city, interest in the well-being of New Yorkers has climbed.

In 2004, Irwin Garfinkel and Julien Teitler of Columbia University’s School of Social Work will administer a fourth wave of the survey to examine the well-being of New York City residents following September 11, 2001. The survey will focus specifically on three themes: the devolution of welfare, the specific needs of particular immigrant groups, and the well-being of youth. The researchers will highlight trends by borough, race/ethnic group, immigration status, age, and educational attainment. They will pay particular attention to the program participation and welfare experiences of the immigrant population.
