Real Household Income at Selected Percentiles, 1968-2010, Age 25-64
The U.S. Census Bureau has been tracking household income since 1967. Despite the relatively consistent rise in both mean and median incomes overall, income growth has been unequally distributed to a substantial degree. Households in the bottom half of the income distribution have seen inflation-adjusted incomes grow only 15-25% over the 40+ years since 1967, an inflation-adjusted increase of about half a percent per year. In contrast, those in the top half of the income distribution have experienced income growth of 50 percent or more, with those higher up in the income distribution experiencing greater income growth.
