Leah Gordon

Assistant Professor of Education, Stanford University

Gordon will write a history of debates over the relationship between education and equality in the United States since the 1920s. Her book will use archival and published sources to examine Americans’ views of the role that schools can and should play in fostering social mobility and alleviating racial and socioeconomic inequalities. This history will illuminate  Americans’ shifting visions of schooling’s egalitarian capacities, as well as education’s limitations as an egalitarian lever. The book will also examine ongoing debates over how much, and what types of, equality are necessary in a just society.
