Between Borders in a Carceral Age: Parental Incarceration and Deportation Among Young Adults

Awarded Scholars:
Melissa Noel, Temple University
Project Date:
Mar 2025

Noncitizens and undocumented immigrants interacting with both immigration and criminal justice polices have long faced disproportionate challenges of this dual system—often referred to as “crimmigration.” These individuals face the risk of being identified, incarcerated, detained, and then deported. In recent years, these policies have created long-term impacts on children of immigrant families. While research has focused on the consequences of parental incarceration and deportation for children, we know less about the long-term consequences as these children become young adults. Criminologist Melissa Noel will examine how the incarceration and deportation of a parent shapes the lives of Black and Latinx young adults. She will conduct in-depth interviews for her study.
