Community Impacts of Immigration Enforcement: Identifying Economic and Demographic Consequences of Worksite Raids
Under Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted numerous raids on factories, food processing plants, construction sites, and other workplaces suspected of employing undocumented workers. However, existing research on workplace raids has typically focused on one or more specific raids and examined the outcomes for individuals and families that were directly affected. Sociologists Erin Hofmann and Guadalupe Márquez-Velarde and economist Sherzod Akhundjanov will examine the impact of workplace immigration raids on local demographics and economic outcomes. They will create a database of all workplace immigration raids between 2005-2008 and 2017-2019 and will analyze data from the Longitudinal Business Database and the American Community Survey for their study.
