Counter Effective? Truancy Laws and Educational Outcomes for Minoritized and Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Students

Awarded Scholars:
Ericka Weathers, Pennsylvania State University
Project Date:
Mar 2020
Award Amount:

Contemporary approaches to reducing truancy and the associated penalties for truancy vary across states, with some states having stricter penalties than others. Weathers will use student-level administrative data from a state department of education to investigate the extent to which racial and socioeconomic differences affect who receives punitive penalties for habitual truancy. She will examine the effects of habitual truancy on educational outcomes and whether the effects differ for minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students.
