Average After Tax Household Income by Quintile, 1979-2010 (Reported in 2010 $)

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), drawing upon data from the Current Population Survey and the IRS' Statistics of Income, compiled data on trends in the distribution of after-tax income between 1979 and 2010 for the U. S. Congress. These data, like measures of pre-tax income, suggest that the distribution of after-tax income in 2010 was substantially more unequal than in 1979, with the lion's share of growth restricted to the top of the income distribution.
