Philip Kasinitz

City University of New York

Research Initiative:

Philip Kasinitz and John Mollenkopf, professors of sociology and political science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will analyze the findings of a major study of the new second generation of immigrants in metropolitan New York, which they are directing with Professor Mary Waters of Harvard University. The study combines a large-scale telephone survey, in-depth interviews, and ethnographic studies to explore how the second generation are faring as they make their first forays into the labor market and begin to start families of their own. During their year in residence, Kasinitz and Mollenkopf will analyze the data and write a book reporting the findings of the study, and they will also edit a second volume of ethnographic work. They will also plan an international conference where their research can be compared to work on the second generation in European countries.
