Rubén G. Rumbaut

University of California, Irvine

Ruben G. Rumbaut professor of sociology at Michigan State University, prepared a book on children of immigrants that examines their efforts to participate successfully in American educational, social and economic life. Drawing upon major new research in San Diego and Miami, Rumbaut focused on the progress of Latin, Asian, and Caribbean youth. His work provided a nuanced and cross-group understanding of how these youth vary in their language and ethnic identity, school aspirations and achievement, and psychological well-being, and explores how their adaptation is shaped by family, school, and community contexts. He also explored the role of racial discrimination and how it is perceived and experienced by the individual.
