Summary

Explanations for the persistence of racial segregation in the contemporary, “post-civil rights” period have focused on racial preferences, socioeconomic resources, and discrimination. Relatively less attention, however, has been paid to the role of another tool of segregation: prison proliferation. Doctoral student in sociology Ángel Mendiola Ross will examine the relationship between prison location and the persistence of racial and economic inequality. They will analyze data from the Geolytics Neighborhood Change Database and data from the Department of Homeland Security for their study.
