The U.S. House of Representatives recently voted to pass the American Health Care Act (AHCA), a new reform poised to dismantle key provisions of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA), likely leaving as many as 28 million Americans uninsured. While the fate of the bill has yet to be decided by the Senate, President Trump and GOP leaders in Congress have stated their plans to privatize or dismantle other social programs. What will these changes mean for the U.S. safety net over the next four years?
On April 3, RSF president Sheldon Danziger participated in a CUNY Graduate Center panel discussion, "The First 100 Days: The Fragile Social Safety Net", on the future of the social safety net under the Trump administration. The panel included Mary T. Bassett (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene), Janet Gornick (CUNY Graduate Center), Michael R. Strain (American Enterprise Institute), and was moderated by moderated by Roosevelt Institute president Felicia Wong.
