Summary

At the heart of consequential struggles in American society is the question, “Who is ‘truly’ American?” While some scholars argue traits such as race and religion capture what is considered to be truly American, others believe that values around issues such as work and political participation are what determine perceived Americanness. Sociologist Victoria Asbury-Kimmel will examine how relationships between identity traits and values impact evaluations of Americanness, specifically with regards immigrants and immigration. She will conduct a survey and a behavioral game experiment for her study.
