Summary
The United States deported an average of 373,000 people annually over the last decade, and the American legal system deems deportation a civil penalty as opposed to a criminal punishment. Doctoral student in sociology Saúl Ramírez will explore how deportation is experienced by Mexican deportees. He will conduct in-depth interviews with Mexican deportees in the U.S., Mexican deportees in Mexico, and U.S.-born children who returned to the U.S. with a deported parent for his study.
