Los Angeles (L.A.) County has the third largest Black population in the United States. Yet some scholars consider L.A. to be an anti-Black city due to issues such as residential segregation, economic marginalization, and police violence. Doctoral student in sociology Demetrius Murphy will explore the strategies Black people in L.A. County use to flourish despite facing such impediments. He will conduct participant observation, surveys, and interviews for his study.
