Conference, Achieving Equity for Women: Policy Alternatives for the New Administration

Project Date:
Award Amount:
$5,000
Summary

Heidi Hartmann, president of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, organized a conference on April 2, 2009, at the Barbara Jordan Conference Center at the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, D.C., to discuss the future of social policies affecting women in the wake of a new national administration. Four main topics were covered, with three panelists to discuss each topic. The first topic considered women in the economic recovery, including how to strengthen the economy by rebuilding the nation’s physical and human infrastructure. The second topic of the conference focused on women baby boomers. Of the women to arrive at retirement age, this generation is the best educated with the longest life expectancy. Discussions included the increased demand for caregivers and how pension and social security systems can be improved to meet women’s future needs. The third session of the conference covered the future of early child care and education infrastructure. Topics included: how recovery funds could be used to create a long-term vision of comprehensive, affordable early education and how early care and education funds can contribute to economic recovery and long-term economic growth. The final conference topic examined the future of health care in the United States and how it—and, consequently, women—will be affected by economic recovery efforts.
