Research on the causes of “deaths of despair” (deaths due to suicide, drug use, and alcohol use) has primarily focused on non-Hispanic whites, and the causes of deaths of despair among minority populations, such as Native Americans, have been understudied. Economists Samuel Myers, Marina Gorzig, Donn Feir, and Randall Akee will examine the relationship between the local economic opportunity and health outcomes by race and gender, with a focus on the Native American population. They will utilize data from the National Center for Health Statistics, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the County Business Pattern (CBP), and the Center for Disease Control for their study.
