Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson on Inequality in America

January 17, 2012

RSF author Jacob Hacker appeared on Bill Moyers' show last week to discuss the consequences of growing inequality in America. "The startling statistics that we have is if you take all of the income gains from 1979 to 2007," Hacker says, "around 40 percent of those gains went to the top 1 percent. And if you look at the bottom 90 percent, they had less than that combined."

The interviews focuses on Winner Take-All Politics, which Hacker co-wrote with political scientist Paul Pierson. You can find more of Hacker's research in the three books he helped edit or write for Russell Sage: Remaking America, Old Assumptions, New Realities and Inequality and American Democracy.
