Since the Supreme Court declared race-conscious university admissions unconstitutional, more colleges are exploring alternative approaches to achieving racial and ethnic diversity in enrollment. The U.S. Departments of Education and Justice have suggested that diversity could be increased by enrolling community college students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Economist Sarah Reber will examine how transfer students affect racial and ethnic diversity at selective California colleges and universities. She will analyze administrative data from the California K-12, community college, financial aid, and public higher education systems as well as National Student Clearinghouse data for her study.
