Modes of Articulation: Linking Race and Class Politics in Chicago’s Deindustrialized Urban Periphery

Sociological literature has widely noted the splits between race- and class-based political movements. Yet the degree to which race- and class-demands have intersected in mass movements has varied widely across U.S. history. Why are some movements successful at linking race and class demands, while others fail? Sociologist Rishi Awatramani will examine how race and class politics are linked in a majority Latino, former steel-producing neighborhood in Chicago. He will conduct interviews with neighborhood residents and activists to better understand how the connection between race and class politics has changed over time.
