Summary
Sociologist Sandra Smith and legal scholar Jonathan Simon will organize a conference for and co-edit an upcoming issue of the RSF journal, “The Criminal Justice System as a Labor Market Institution.” The issue will examine the relationship between criminal justice contact and inequalities in labor market experiences and outcomes. Papers will cover four main topics: 1) the consequences for mass incarceration of intersecting labor market institutions; 2) criminal justice policies as structural barriers to employment; 3) effects of post-prison employment on future criminal justice involvement; and 4) work and identity in and after prison.
