Annika Hinze will work on a project using “ambos Nogales” – sister towns Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and Nogales, Arizona, USA which sit across from each other on the U.S.-Mexico border – as a case study for the social, political, and local impact of U.S. border fortification policies. She will examine everyday practices that resist, rework, and/or reproduce boundaries between individuals, communities, and countries along the border. She will examine cases of border remediation as practiced by local humanitarian groups, shelters on both sides of the border, and the ways in which migrants navigate the border. She will also investigate cases of border defense as practiced by border patrol and vigilante groups in the area. The project will show the effects of immigration policy and border fortification on different groups on both sides of the border, and how they learn to navigate these policies.
