Analog Trades in a Digital World: The Platformization of In-Person Service Work

Awarded Scholars:
Benjamin Shestakofsky, University of Pennsylvania
Project Date:
Nov 2024
Award Amount:
$71,563

Researchers have thoroughly examined platforms used by workers in routinized, low-wage occupations such as ride-hail and delivery. However, few, if any, studies have investigated how the emergence of digital platforms has shaped the experiences of independent professionals providing in-person services in sectors as diverse as home improvement, event services, and wellness. Sociologist Benjamin Shestakofsky will examine how workers providing in-person services use and experience digital marketplace platforms. He will conduct interviews for his study.
