The Effects of Public Eviction Records on Low-Income Households
Awarded External Scholars
Project Date:
Summary
Housing advocates, media outlets, and policymakers have long argued that a public eviction filing record, regardless of the outcome of the eviction hearing, carries significant consequences, particularly for low-income households. However, we have little evidence of the impact of eviction filing records on individual outcomes. Doctoral student in economics Grace Ortuzar will examine the impact of an eviction filing record on credit access, homelessness, and other forms of housing insecurity. She will analyze eviction filing records from the Circuit Court of Cook County, data from Record Information Services, Infutor, Experian, and Chicago’s Homelessness Management System for her study.
