Homeownership can be a vehicle for wealth accumulation and financial independence, but, in some cases, a pathway to debt and precarity. Researchers, however, rarely examine how pathways to and experiences of homeownership vary by gender. Sociologists Robin Bartram and Japonica Brown-Saracino will investigate how gender influences the ways individuals become homeowners and their experiences of homeownership. They will conduct interviews with single homeowners in Boston, Massachusetts, and New Orleans, Louisiana for their study.
