Since April 2022, the state of Texas, at the direction of the Texas governor, has bussed over 200,000 unauthorized migrants from border towns to New York City. These migrants have been placed in homeless shelters and their children have been enrolled in nearby public schools. Economist Kevin Shih will examine how the influx of young migrant children has impacted public elementary school education. He will analyze data from the Department of Homeless Services, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Education, and publicly available data on school-level outcomes for his study.
