In recent years, the Service Workers International Union (SEIU) has organized and won elections to unionize workers in hospitals and nursing homes. Sociologist Jamie McCallum, political scientist Adam Dean, and health policy experts Atheendar Venkataramani and Paula Chatterjee will examine impact of unionization on workplace conditions for healthcare workers. They will analyze data from multiple sources including SEIU data on the union status of all nursing homes and hospitals in the U.S., data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for their study.
