Most Americans come into contact with the criminal legal system through the misdemeanor legal system. It has been argued that revenue generation is the primary reason for the misdemeanor system, including legal financial obligations and misdemeanor probation. Doctoral student in criminology Marshall White will investigate the role legal debt plays in perceived fairness and legitimacy of misdemeanor probation. They will conduct semi-structured interviews for their study.
