Non-White Meta-Categories in the United States and United Kingdom: Unpacking the Language of Racial Difference and Justice
Awarded External Scholars
Project Date:
Summary
Several Western countries use non-white meta-categories – single categories that include multiple racial and ethnic groups considered non-white – despite the demographic, cultural, and political differences between these groups. The use of these terms, such as people of color (POC) in the U.S. and Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) in the U.K., have faced increased scrutiny since the global Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. Doctoral student in sociology Mari Sanchez will examine how non-white meta-categories have become increasingly challenged and revised in the U.S. and the U.K. She will conduct interviews and content analysis for her study.
