Political Consequences and Remedies of Partisan Dehumanization in the U.S.
Awarded External Scholars
Project Date:
Summary
Partisan dehumanization—conceiving members of the other party as less than fully human beings—is not a new phenomenon nor is it limited to elite partisans. Recent studies find that rank-and-file members of both parties dehumanize those of the opposing party and do so to a much greater extent than individuals dehumanize other marginalized groups, such as Muslims and Mexican immigrants. Doctoral candidate in political science Jieun Lee will examine the political consequences of partisan dehumanization as well as potential remedies. She will conduct two survey experiments for her study.
