Summary

The Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR), also known as the U.S. immigration courts, is understaffed and has a tremendous backlog of cases. A backlog within the EOIR threatens the performance and fairness of the immigration system, and while recent presidents have prioritized immigrant enforcement, they have not addressed deficiencies in the EOIR. Political scientist Nicholas Bednar will examine the causes and consequences of the underfunding of U.S. immigration courts. He will conduct interviews with a variety of stakeholders for his study.
