Rising Social Insecurity among Older Americans
Social Security is a vital source of income for the elderly, but eligibility is not universal. Qualification is based on lifetime earnings in the formal labor market, which means men and women with sporadic earnings may be excluded. Doctoral student in sociology Devin Rutan will investigate the role of mass incarceration and deindustrialization in the rise of older Americans ineligible to receive social security. He will analyze data from the Wisconsin Administrative Data Core, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, and other sources for his study.
