Daniel S. Nagin

Daniel Nagin will work on a book that examines bystander intervention and decision-making. He will integrate research on “reactive guardianship,” in which bystanders intervene in crimes in progress, and “proactive guardianship,” in which potential offenders are deterred from attempting a crime due to the risk of bystander intervention. This research identifies the characteristics and motivations of private citizens who are willing to intervene during crimes and looks at their decision-making processes when choosing whether to directly confront the offender themselves or to call and cooperate with the police. It also investigates the circumstances under which the threat of bystander intervention deters offending.
