Summary

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has rapidly advanced over the past two decades, most recently with the swift spread of generative AI tools that began in late 2022. Yet, empirical evidence on the impact of AI on labor market outcomes remains sparse and largely prospective. Economist Till von Wachter will examine the effects of AI on the employment and earnings of AI and STEM workers in California over the past 20 years. He will analyze data from California’s Unemployment Insurance system, O*NET, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics for his study.
