Conference and RSF Journal Issue: The Coleman Report at Fifty: Its Legacy and Enduring Value

On October 5 and 6, 2016,  Johns Hopkins University will host a conference, “The Coleman Report at 50,” to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the 1966 Equality of Educational Opportunity Report (also known as the Coleman report), and the publication of a special issue of RSF: The Russell Sage Journal of the Social Sciences. The contributors to the journal issue will present their papers at the conference, which aims to explore how the Coleman Report continues to influence today’s educational and social policy debates.

Led by issue editors Karl Alexander and Stephen Morgan (Johns Hopkins), participating scholars will examine the Coleman Report’s methods and conclusions through the lens of social science advances over the past half century, and analyze issues such as school reform, persistent racial segregation, and changing educational standards to provide a thoughtful analysis of barriers to educational opportunity today. In addition to the contributors to the journal issue, conference participants will include U.S. Education Secretary John King and preeminent education policymakers from across the country.

The open-access special issue of RSF will be available for download in full on October 5. Please visit the Johns Hopkins School of Education site to register for the conference.
