L–R: Carla Shedd; Yarimar Bonilla

Carla Shedd (CUNY Graduate Center), author of the RSF book Unequal City, and current RSF visiting scholar Yarimar Bonilla (Rutgers University) will join a panel discussion hosted by the First Person Plural Reading Series on the state of the U.S. one year after the election of Donald Trump to the presidency. The panel will include a number of other scholars, activists, and artists.

Shedd is a sociologist focusing on race, criminal justice, and urban policy. In Unequal City, she investigates how disadvantaged youth in Chicago navigate their neighborhoods, life opportunities, and encounters with the law, focusing in particular on how schools either reinforce or ameliorate the social inequalities that shape the worlds of these adolescents.

Bonilla is an anthropologist and Caribbean Studies scholar. During her time at the foundation, she is studying the Puerto Rican statehood movement in the context of the territory’s current fiscal, economic, and social crisis. She has also been a frequent commentator in the media on the ongoing hurricane crisis in Puerto Rico.

The discussion will take place on Election Night, November 7, at Shrine Harlem. The event is free and open to the public.
