The Consortium for Police Leadership in Equity (CPLE) will host its second summer conference between August 23-25 in Washington, D.C. The conference, partially funded by the Foundation, aims to forge partnerships between police departments and social science researchers and to improve data collection and analysis on issues related to policing equity. Here is an excerpt from the CPLE's announcement:
The CPLE 2nd Annual Summer Conference will build upon the success of our 2010 conference, which was the largest convening of researchers, law enforcement, policy makers, and community advocates devoted to advancing equity in law enforcement. This year, we will focus on the issues surrounding data collection and analyses, and examine the ways in which empirical research can inform best practices in policing.Conference participants include 33 law enforcement executives from major cities in the US and Canada, 21 leading social scientists specializing in the science of contemporary bias, numerous representatives from federal agencies including the Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Office and Office of Justice Programs, and community advocacy group executives.
The conference is an effort of the Foundation's Racial Bias in Policing working group, which seeks to integrate experimental and survey research with unprecedented access to police personnel data to shed light on how, why, and when race influences police decisions. You can read several reports produced by the working group, as well as more details on its research agenda.
