On November 11, 2026, RSF trustees Tracey Meares (Yale University) and Tom Sugrue (New York University) will participate on a panel “Liberty and Justice for All? Citizenship in America 250 Years After the Declaration” based on the themes from a forthcoming volume of The ANNALS, tentatively titled “Citizenship and Belonging in America: Taking Stock at 250.” The panel will be hosted by The American Academy of Political and Social Science in partnership with New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service and Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Polly Trottenberg (Wagner School of Public Service, New York University) will deliver opening remarks and Sugrue will moderate the discussion among Jamelle Bouie (The New York Times), Meares, and Robert Lieberman (Johns Hopkins University). The panelists will explore how notions of citizenship and belonging in America have changed over repeated periods of turmoil and struggle, as well as the state of the citizenship ideal today in the wake of early November’s election results. Lieberman, Meares, and Sugrue are co–special editors of the forthcoming ANNALS volume.
