At the 2017 annual meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA), RSF author Carla Shedd’s book Unequal City: Race, Schools, and Perceptions of Injustice was awarded Honorable Mention by the ASA Section on Section on Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility.

In her book, Shedd investigates how disadvantaged youth in Chicago navigate their neighborhoods, life opportunities, and encounters with the law, focusing in particular on how schools either reinforce or ameliorate the social inequalities that shape the worlds of these adolescents. Drawing from an array of data and in-depth interviews with Chicago youth, Shedd offers new insight into how urban students develops a keen “perceptions of injustice,” or the recognition that their economic and educational opportunities are restricted by their place in the social hierarchy.

Unequal City is also the winner of the 2016 book award from the ASA Section on Race, Gender, and Class and the 2015 C. Wright Mills Award.
