Summary

This grant is co-funded by the Spencer and Hewlett Foundations.
Most scholarly and media attention following the Supreme Court’s 2023 decisions in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill has focused on highly selective predominantly white institutions (PWIs), where race-conscious admissions practices were most visible and contested. However, the ruling applies to all institutions receiving federal funds, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Education scholar Royel Johnson and educational psychologist Jessica DeCuir-Gunby will examine how HBCUs are adapting to this new legal and political environment. They will conduct a survey with senior leaders across accredited HBCUs and analyze data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System for their study.
