Dina Okamoto, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Davis, will work on a book examining how residential and occupational segregation have facilitated the formation of a common identity among U.S. immigrants from different Asian countries. Using interviews with leaders in ethnic and pan-ethnic organizations, as well as data on intermarriage, organizational formation, and collective action, Okamoto will argue that the emergence of Asian group solidarity stems from living and working together (either voluntarily or by compulsion), and not because of labor market competition with other racial and ethnic groups.
