Miriam Golden
Professor of Political Science
Miriam A. Golden, professor of political science at the University of California, Los Angeles, will analyze the causes of political corruption in Italy from 1948 to 1994. In recent years, scholars have unveiled the networks of corruption in Italian politics, but they have not explained why such widespread corruption persisted in a relatively wealthy democracy. Drawing upon a comprehensive record of judicial efforts to indict corrupt politicians, Golden will investigate whether political corruption was due to heavy government involvement in economic affairs, the relative underdevelopment of some regions, or institutional features of the electoral system, such as competition between parties or factionalism within parties.
