Raquel Fernandez, Professor of Economics at New York University, will explore the relationship between gender inequality, marital sorting, and the intergenerational transmission of inequality. Using a variety of U.S. and international data sets, she will examine whether and how improvements in the employment prospects for women affect their decision about if, when, and whom to marry. She will also explore the implications of these employment changes for economic inequality, asking whether increased financial independence alters the likelihood that women will marry men of similar socio-economic status, thereby perpetuating class differences.
