Robert C. Lieberman
Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Affairs
Robert C. Lieberman, assistant professor of political science and public affairs at Columbia University, will compare the politics of racial conflict in the United States, Great Britain, and France. Lieberman will show how the development of national political institutions shaped the role of race in questions of political representation, economic opportunity, and social integration. Whereas European political institutions were more highly developed before racial issues became salient, making it easier for racial groups to adapt to existing arrangements, the decentralized and pluralist American system grew in conjunction with, and even reinforced, racial domination and conflict. Lieberman's work sheds light on the unique prevalence of race in American politics.
