Childhood poverty is a risk factor for deleterious outcomes later in life. Both environmental and biological processes are associated with these outcomes, but the biological mechanisms that account for how socioeconomic status (SES) disadvantages affect long-term vulnerability are not well understood. Some biological research suggests that early disadvantage programs the epigenome through DNA methylation (DNAm) marks that affect gene expression, and that childhood adversity can induce lasting DNAm changes.

Currently about 2.2 million people in the United States are in jail or prison and another 4.7 million are on probation or parole. Individuals leaving jails or prisons have high rates of health, mental health and substance abuse problems that make it difficult for them to obtain housing, employment and social support. In turn, these difficulties increase the likelihood of re-arrest and re-incarceration.
