Studies on existing housing and renter-supportive programs have shown that secure housing can reduce child maltreatment. Social worker Liwei Zhang will conduct a natural experiment on the effects of state-level eviction moratoria and other supportive programs on child maltreatment reports during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite high rates of employment among refugees in their home countries, refugees are at high risk for experiencing poverty in their host countries. Social welfare scholar Mitra Naseh will examine the poverty levels and economic integration among newly settled refugees who arrive under the Afghan Placement and Assistance Program. She will administer surveys to refugees in Oregon and Missouri for her study.

The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing recession exacerbated economic vulnerabilities in part because the most advantaged workers retained jobs while the least advantaged faced declining employment prospects and financial insecurity. Although the 2020 CARES Act expanded eligibility for Unemployment Insurance (UI) and provided an additional $600 per week for recipients, workers experienced variation in UI receipt due to differences in state UI benefit levels, the efficiency of bureaucratic systems, and time-to-receipt of payments.
