Undocumented & Privileged: Immigrant Selectivity and Legal Status in the High School-to-College Transition

Awarded Scholars:
Yader Lanuza, University of California, Santa Barbara
Project Date:
Mar 2022
Award Amount:
$29,989

Scholars argue that immigration status is important for the socioeconomic trajectories of young people, including their educational experiences. However, the importance of pre-migration social class, relative to immigration status, has yet to be fully examined. Sociologist Yader Lanuza will explore the case of undocumented students’ transition from high school to college to understand the consequences of pre-migration social class and immigration status on schooling. Lanuza will conduct interviews with undocumented students, immigrant students with green card or who are naturalized, children of immigrants born in the United States, and native-born children of native-born parents to better understand the college experience of undocumented students.
