Based on field studies of the 1929 administration of marriage laws in 96 in 30 states of the United States, Marriage and the State is an account of the marriage laws in existence at the time. The historical background of marriage law and social importance of the topics are also considered.

This manual was prepared as a companion to Marriage and the State by Mary E. Richmond and Fred S. Hall. Marriage and the State is an account, based on field studies in 96 cities in 30 states, of the marriage laws in existence in 1929. This volume combines all the statutory regulations of marriage, and all the pertinent court decisions relating to marriage in each jurisdiction of the continental United States at the time. It contains 50 outlines of the law of the several states, the law of the District of Columbia, and the federal law. The statute law includes all legislation in force at the end of the 1927 legislative sessions; the decisional law, all printed cases up to January, 1927.

This book examines the adoption process in the United States, asking whether the process provides sufficient protection for children. It deals specifically with independent adoptions—that is, outside of social agencies, through a process in which would-be adoptive parents secure the children either directly from their natural parents or relatives, or through intermediaries such as physicians or lawyers who know of the natural parents’ interest in giving up their children. It details a follow-up investigation with families made during 1956 and 1957 around the time the adopted children were about ten years old.

This 1942 volume is the fourth edition of Social Work as a Profession, originally published in 1935, detailing the vast growth of social work as a profession from its emergence as a humanitarian effort in the nineteenth century to the rapid changes in professionalization at the end of the 1930s. It includes census data on the number of social workers, as well as additional figures on salaries and educational and training.

A volume of the “Population of the United States in the 1980s” series commissioned by the National Committee for Research on the 1980 Census, which utilized data from the 1980 census to analyze trends in American life, Dollars and Dreams explores the dramatic changes in U.S. standard of living as wage stagnation and rising income inequality in the 1970s and 1980s began to undermine Americans’ traditional economic optimism. Levy examines various social and economic trends in income distribution since World War II, such as the rise of the suburbs, the fall of the steel industry, the baby bust, double-income families, single-parent households, income growth among the elderly, and deficits in Washington. His follow-up, New Dollars and Dreams: American Incomes and Economic Change, was published by the Russell Sage Foundation in 1999.
