The Charity Organization Bulletins were printed for the confidential use of charity organization societies by the Charity Department of the Russell Sage Foundation. The bulletins for December 1910 through November 1911 cover topics such as mental health care, the treatment of widows and deserted wives, homelessness, and how to record social work cases.

This booklet provides several tables on the status of physical education at public schools in the United States. Tables include information on how many schools (and in what regions) have a department of physical education, regular instruction in hygiene, swimming pools, gymnasiums, tennis courts, boat houses, and so on.

This booklet provides an argument for medical inspection of schools. It notes that the American population now lives predominantly in towns and cities rather than on farms and the school has become the center of infection in most communities. Medical inspection in schools allows authorities to detect contagious diseases and protect healthy children from those who are ill, stopping or preventing epidemics.

This booklet reprints an article from the American Physical Education Review, February 1908. It is a report of an address given before the Second Annual Convention of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, in New York City, on December 28, 1907. It argues that athletics are important for the values that they instill in those who play sports.

This booklet discusses the reasons for the slowing of students’ progress in schools. It includes a text reprinted from the tenth annual report of Dr. William H. Maxwell, superintendent of schools of New York City, as well as an investigation by Leonard P. Ayres, with the assistance of Luther Halsey Gulick, into this problem in fifteen schools in Manhattan.

This booklet was reprinted from the Proceedings of the Sixth International Congress of Tuberculosis for the Russell Sage Foundation. It discusses detecting tuberculosis in the public schools and educating students about the disease.

This booklet is reprinted from Chapter 117, Session of 190,7 of the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (revised at Session of 1908, Chapter 108). It presents New Jersey’s playground law, which permits the mayor of any city in the state to appoint three people from that city to a Board of Playground Commissioners for that city. It goes on to discuss the duties of the board.

This booklet contains two articles reprinted from The Playground. The first discusses the obstacles to developing playgrounds in social centers—namely, the narrow views of taxpayers, the clash of selfish interests in playgrounds’ location and distribution, and the hostility of immediate neighbors on account of the noise and disturbance of so many children at play. The second discusses the importance of playgrounds in cities generally.
